In the world of remote work, niche research is key to finding your competitive advantage. It helps in establishing the freelancers as experts in a specific area, making them more valuable to potential clients and employers. This way, remote workers can differentiate themselves from the competition and attract more opportunities. The much more interesting side for every worker is that a writer specializing in a niche can increase the price of his services and no longer work for pennies like a generalist.
Why does this happen? Take every job board for copywriters and see what employers are looking for. They want to work with a writer who understands their industry. If you do not understand the world you write about, you cannot propose high-level texts.
Two Cases From My Life
Once, I asked a good freelancer to help me. He had to write about ten articles for me. He did everything and respected the deadlines, but what he wrote in the articles revealed that he absolutely did not understand what he had to write about. I was desperate and had to correct all those texts. And you know that it’s much easier to write something than to correct someone else’s work.
Another case was when I had to translate a text that explained the work of an industrial device for electricians at one factory. I don’t know why they decided to entrust it to me (I was on their list of outside translators). Maybe the factory didn’t find anyone of expert translators who wanted to do this job. And I was just graduated from university, so I didn’t understand what the catch was.
Be that as it may, I accepted that translation and worked all day and all night on it. The next day I should have already taken it to the factory. I translated it, yes. But while reading it, I didn’t understand it. I could not check whether I translated the text correctly simply because when reading it in my native language I did not understand a single word. Luckily, my dad was an electrical engineer. He read my translation, told me that everything was correct — and I went to the employer.
How can you solve this problem? Take the time to study websites, statistics, blogs and more in the industry. The top 10 in SERP will be enough. When you feel ready, do a task similar to what employers are looking for. Create a format similar to the one that needs to be done. Look for opportunities to publish it on an authoritative site. If not, publish it in your profile (Medium, LinkedIn etc.). After that, write/ call the employer with an example that demonstrates your knowledge of the sector.
